La etajele superioare ale clădirii se aflau 120 de apartamente, în timp ce partea inferioară a imobilului nu era ocupată. Clădirea găzduise în trecut restaurante, un cinematograf şi săli de karaoke, a menţionat primarul Chen Chi-mai.

Potrivit autorităţilor, echipele de salvare continuă să verifice la toate etajele dacă mai există persoane blocate în clădire. 41 de oameni au fost răniţi în incendiu.

Focul a fost stins după mai mult de patru ore, la operaţiune participând 145 de pompieri şi 72 de autospeciale.

Preşedinta Taiwanului, Tsai Ing-wen, le-a cerut autorităţilor să continue operaţiunile de salvare, să ajute familiile afectate să se reinstaleze în altă parte şi să efectueze o anchetă riguroasă pentru a stabili cauza acestei catastrofe.
